It's another cold and cloudy day in the Erie area. You're stuck inside, looking out at what seems to be a lifeless landscape and wondering why you didn't go south for the winter. Suddenly, a flash of red catches your eye. A cardinal lands in the feeder and begins feasting on the sunflower seeds. A flock of chickadees arrives, bursting with energy as each little bird grabs a sunflower seed or peanut and flies to a nearby perch to crack it open. Nuthatches and titmice are not far behind the chickadees, grabbing the Bark Butter spread on the tree. Woodpeckers join the mix as they swoop in to the suet feeder. Mourning doves and juncos cover the ground beneath the feeder as they pick up the white millet that has fallen. That lifeless landscape is instantly transformed into an enjoyable flurry of activity and winter seems a little less dreary.
