The 2010 Great Backyard Bird Count is over and the results are coming in! Will we break last year's records? The last of the reports have been submitted and all that remains is the finalizing of the results, which you can track at the Great Backyard Bird Count website. Wild Birds Unlimited is proud to continue sponsoring this important citizen science program. Looking to count birds year round? Take part in eBird - a free online checklist program by Cornell that tracks bird populations around the globe.
We will start posting initial results February 18th and update them periodically until all results are finalized.
So far, over 96,000 checklists (a new record!) have been accepted, 600 species of birds were recorded, and over 11 million individual birds have been recorded. Cardinals are the most frequently reported species, appearing on over 53,000 checklists, while the American Robin is currently the most numerous bird with over 1,800,000 individuals tallied so far.
Pennsylvania submitted only 4,861 checklists this year, down from last year's nationwide high of 5,519. Erie turned in 106 checklists this year, placing us second in the state for number of checklists. Juncos were the most frequently reported species for Pennsylvania, while Cardinals topped the list for Erie.
Take a look at last year's results and compare them to the results as they come in this year! Last year shattered a number of counting records. Over 93,600 checklists were tallied, 620 species of birds were recorded, and over 11,000,000 individual birds were counted! The count reflected the massive invasion of Pine Siskins and documents the continued decline of once-common species. Pennsylvania submitted the most checklists last year (5,519 lists) and was second for number of individual birds counted (905,097 birds). Erie submitted 82 checklists, placing us third in the state for number of checklists.
The Northern Cardinal is the most reported bird, appearing on over 47,000 checklists across the US and Canada. The Northern Cardinal also is the most frequently listed species out of the 135 species reported in Pennsylvania and out of the 57 species verified in the Erie area.
The following birds were reported on the greatest number of Erie checklists:
For Pennsylvania, the most reported birds were:
