Providing Water in the Winter

Robins at a birdbath with a WBU Birdbath HeaterWater sources in winter are a wonderful way to attract a variety of birds, such as the American Robin, that don’t normally visit feeders. They provide a reliable source of water for bathing and drinking. Open drinking water in the winter is hard for birds to find.  They may eat snow to get the water they need, but they must a lot of expend valuable energy to melt the snow that they consume.  Bathing is especially important in cold weather in order to keep feathers in top condition. Research has shown that a chickadee with well-maintained feathers can sustain a 70 degree layer of insulation between the outside air and its skin.

Cardinals at a WBU Heated BirdbathWe offer a wonderful selection of heated birdbaths and heaters to keep your feathered friends coming to your backyard all winter long! Many will keep an area ice-free in temperatures down to -20 degrees F!  Our durable plastic birdbaths in 14- or 20-inch diameter dishes contain heating units and automatic thermostats. This means the heaters work only when the temperature drops. Adjustable hardware allows you to mount them on virtually any birdbath pedestal or on your deck railing so you can watch the birds enjoy a winter bath up close.

WBU Birdbath HeaterThe WBU Birdbath Heater can make any birdbath in your yard a heated one. Place the heater in any birdbath and plug into a nearby outlet. The de-icer keeps an area free of ice while the stainless steel guard shields wildlife from the heating element.

      IMPORTANT!

A birdbath heater is designed to keep an open area of water in your birdbath -
it DOES NOT prevent concrete or pottery birdbaths from cracking.

Our winters can be very harsh on pottery and concrete birdbaths.  We strongly recommend that you either bring your good pottery and concrete baths inside for the winter, or else remove all water and cover them up so moisture cannnot sit in the bath during the winter months.  Use old birdbath tops or plastic birdbath pans in conjunction with birdbath heaters to provide your birds with water in the winter.

A note on solar heaters:  Erie typically does not receive enough sunlight during our winter months for solar heated birdbaths to work effectively.
